Is There a Difference between an Iced Coffee and a Cold Brew?

Lovers of all things coffee understand that there is now a wider range of coffee choices than there has ever been before. It can be bewildering for those people who don’t drink coffee, or who are just starting to get into coffee. There is just so much to try, from the lattes, cappuccinos and macchiatos, and now the cold brew. In the summer months, there is a desire from some people to have a colder drink and that’s where an iced coffee has become a popular choice. What is the difference though, between an iced coffee and a cold brew? It’s important to understand the difference if you are thinking of trying them both out.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that cold brew and iced coffee is the same thing. On looks alone they certainly could be seen as the same thing. The difference comes in how they are both made, however. Iced coffee is made by brewing hot coffee in the same way as you usually would. What happens then, is that you let the hot coffee cool down and then pour it over ice, creating the iced coffee. This is the simple way to produce a cool coffee for a hot day when you need that caffeine fix.

Where cold brew differs is that it is made without heat in the first place. Ground coffee is steeped in cool, filtered water for many hours at a time, creating a sweet and smooth finished result that is completely different to the temperature and end result that you get from a regular drip coffee. Cold water is used, meaning that it takes longer for the flavour to be extracted. There is hardly any difference in calorific content as a result, but there is a difference in the amount of caffeine present.

If you know much about coffee, you’ll know that it often becomes an obsession. There are a few different types of iced coffee obsessions, as well as cold brew recipes. Once you get into the taste, it is realty easy to get hooked and want to try as many different types of coffee as possible. We’re sure that you’ll be an iced coffee and cold brew obsessive after reading this article.
